What to Wear to a Delta Sigma Theta National Convention

Crimson and cream, a week of governance and sisterhood, and thousands of women photographed from the opening session to the banquet. The National Convention is Delta at full strength — so the wardrobe has to carry the colors and the moment. Here's how to dress all of it without overpacking.

Crimson Lava Goddess Kaftan by Sai SankohLava Goddess Kaftan

Founded at Howard University on January 13, 1913 by 22 women — whose first public act, weeks later, was marching in the Woman Suffrage Procession on Pennsylvania Avenue — Delta Sigma Theta built its legacy on public service and courage. Its colors, crimson and cream, stand for courage and purity, and the National Convention is where the organization gathers to govern, honor and celebrate.

This guide comes from a Black-owned house with a real Delta bond. Sai Sankoh has presented a custom collection modeled by Delta members at the Dallas showroom, and the label has been worn by Deltas including White House correspondent April Ryan, singer K. Michelle — who wore the custom Sai Sankoh Zemorah gown in a music video — and Pat Smith. It was named Best Resortwear by D Magazine in 2024.

The colors

Crimson and cream, worn with intention

Let crimson and cream lead — as real clothing, not a uniform. A crimson goddess kaftan or a floor-length gown reads beautifully at the banquet. Cream and ivory separates are sharp for daytime sessions and photograph clean against a convention backdrop. A print that carries crimson is a smart everyday choice for the marketplace and committee days, because it reads as you first and the colors second. When in doubt, keep the line clean and let the crimson be the statement.

The week

What the convention asks for

Plenary and business sessions. Long hours of governance — comfort matters. Wide-leg trousers with a clean blouse, or a fluid dress, with a block heel.

Workshops and the marketplace. Movement and photos all day. A shirt dress or a set you can split keeps you put-together.

Public meeting and ceremonies. A polished, photographed moment — a crimson dress or a clean cream look.

The banquet. The dress-up night. A long crimson goddess kaftan or floor-length gown carries dinner, awards and the celebration after.

Why these pieces

Made to be photographed, made for Deltas

A National Convention is documented end to end, and the pieces that hold up are the ones built to be looked at: original prints on fine silk, one-size goddess kaftans that flatter a wide range of bodies, and color that comes alive in photos. That's what Sai Sankoh makes — and it's already a Delta favorite. Beyond the custom crimson-and-cream looks created with Delta members, the label has dressed April Ryan, K. Michelle and Pat Smith, and it carries the credibility of D Magazine's Best Resortwear and a roster that includes Beyoncé and supermodel Iman.

It travels, too. The fabrics resist hard creasing, the goddess cut needs no fitting room, and one piece restyles from a session to the banquet with a change of shoe — which matters across a convention week.

Pack smart

The convention capsule

Build around a few hard workers: a crimson banquet piece, a cream or printed set you can split, a shirt dress for the marketplace, wide-leg trousers with two blouses, and a silk scarf to tie the colors. A block heel for day, a dressier sandal for night, a tote and a clutch. That's most of the week from a carry-on — and every piece earns its place at the next regional, state meeting and gala. Check the official program before you pack so you're ready for white-attire days and formal nights.
